A Story of Determination: Robert Kwavi's Journey with the National Development Bank

In a quiet village called Jambitanget, nestled within North Wosera LLG in the Wosera/Gawi District, Robert Kwavi, a 52-year-old family man, is a testament to the power of perseverance and community leadership.

As an elder of the AOG church and a respected community leader, Robert has always been a man of integrity. Known for his financial discipline and commitment to uplifting those around him, he has spent much of his life serving his community while supporting his family of five children.

For over a decade, Robert operated a small-scale SME (Small and Medium Enterprise), selling store goods in his village. Despite the challenges, his resilience and experience prepared him for something bigger. In early 2024, Robert took his first steps toward expanding his business by reaching out to the National Development Bank (NDB) under the MSME-YSBE Starter Loan program. His goal? To purchase wet cocoa beans and tap into the growing demand for cocoa in East Sepik Province.

Robert's journey with the NDB began in February 2024, followed by subsequent consultations in July and September, when he submitted a detailed loan proposal. With his extensive background in SME operations and a clear vision for his cocoa business, Robert's application demonstrated promise.

On October 4, 2024, Robert's loan was successfully funded, marking a significant milestone in his entrepreneurial journey. His first repayment commenced a month later, a step that reaffirmed his commitment to growing his business sustainably.

Today, Robert is not just a businessman; he’s an inspiration. His story reflects the opportunities that financial support and determination can unlock. Grateful for the assistance, Robert has already expressed his intention to return for a second loan after fully servicing the first, signalling his drive to expand further.

The National Development Bank takes pride in supporting individuals like Robert, whose dedication to self-improvement and community development aligns with the bank's mission to foster growth and prosperity across Papua New Guinea.

Robert Kwavi's journey is a reminder that dreams, when paired with effort and the right support, can flourish.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr. Garry Hersey expressed gratitude towards Mr. Kwavi for choosing NDB as the bank of choice to start and grow his cocoa business, which is a testament of what NDB is here for. “NDB is driving to provide funding assistance to the indigenous people of PNG to either start or grow their business and even diversify, which is what happened for Robert.

“NDB has 19 branches around the country to assist our indigenous people. We’ve improved our loan features for MSME loans at 4% Interest Rate. If you can meet the loan requirements, NDB may assist with funding.” Mr. Hersey added.

Mr. Hersey also acknowledged the NDB Board for leading the Bank to drive the Marape-Rosso Government’s MSME & SME Agenda, under the leadership of Minister Duma and Kumul Consolidated Holdings (KCH).
