From Humble Beginnings to Enterprise Growth: How One Aitape Entrepreneur Rose with NDB’s Support
In the evolving landscape of Papua New Guinea’s MSME and SME sector, the story of ordinary citizens rising to extraordinary heights continues to define the spirit of local entrepreneurship. Among these stories stands a remarkable example of resilience, belief, and transformation — the journey of Jacklyn Takil Yenas from Aitape Town in West Sepik Province.
What began with a single conversation in 2017 has grown into a multi sector enterprise, proving that with determination, discipline, and the right financial partner, dreams can become thriving businesses.
Jacklyn’s entry into the world of business was not through grand plans or formal training. It began when she met representatives of the National Development Bank (NDB) during a marketing outreach by the Wewak Branch team. That engagement opened her eyes to the possibilities available through NDB’s financial products tailored specifically for Papua New Guinean entrepreneurs.
With courage and hope, she took her first step that same year — submitting her very first loan application.
In 2018, Jacklyn received funding for her first major investment: a brand new 15 seater Toyota HiAce from Ela Motors. This marked the official birth of her PMV business. Recognizing the unmet transport needs of Aitape’s communities, she reinvested wisely, purchasing a second 15 seater in 2020 and expanding further with a 26 seater Toyota Coaster in 2022.
Her PMV operation soon grew into a lifeline for locals travelling between key routes in Aitape. Through disciplined financial habits, timely loan repayments, and responsible management, Jacklyn built a business foundation strong enough to support expansion beyond transport.
With increased confidence and growing business insight, Jacklyn diversified her operations. She opened her first retail shop in Aitape, tapping into the demand for general goods and household items. Not long after, she took another bold step — expanding to Vanimo and establishing an additional retail outlet there.
Her enterprise, once an informal venture relying solely on modest personal savings, had now transformed into a multi sector business operation spanning PMV services, retail, and logistics.
In 2026, Jacklyn once again turned to NDB for support and secured her fourth loan. This time, she invested in a three seater Toyota Land Cruiser to streamline the transportation of goods between Wewak, Aitape, and Vanimo. The vehicle now serves as a crucial link in her supply chain, improving efficiency, reducing costs, and expanding her reach.
Her evolution from a first time loan applicant to a seasoned entrepreneur is a testament to perseverance — and to the transformative power of accessible financial support.
Jacklyn continues to inspire others in her community who feel uncertain or fearful about starting a business.
